Singapore Airlines has officially announced the launch of the longest commercial flight in the world. On the 11th of October, 2018, Singapore will begin nonstop commercial flight service connecting Singapore and New York. The flag carrier would be operating a fleet of brand new ultra long range Airbus A350-900ULR.
Singapore Airlines will be operating three flights for the first week. The flights from Singapore to the Newark Liberty International Airport are scheduled on Thursday, Saturday and Monday. The daily flight service will be available from the 18th of October. The second A350-900ULR would be inducted by then.
Singapore Airlines is the first procurer of the A350-900ULR among commercial carriers in the world. The swanky new aircraft features a traditional two-class layout. There would be sixty seven seats in business class and ninety four in premium economy class. Tickets have been on sale since the 1st of June across various channels. Tickets are now available on a progressive basis. There would be more clarity once the expected daily schedule gets finalized.
The longest commercial flight in the world will be covering a distance of sixteen thousand and seven hundred kilometres or nine thousand nautical miles. The flight time would be eighteen hours and forty five minutes. This is not the first time Singapore Airlines would be serving this route. The carrier operated flights from Singapore to Newark till 2013 but it has to suspend its operations when Airbus recalled its A340-500s.
Commenting on the development the CEO of Singapore Airlines, Goh Choon Phong has said that the carrier has constantly tried to offer the most satiating flying experience to its customers. It attempts to uphold the same standards of service and convenience for the new route. The ultra long range airbus is the most state of the art commercial aircraft in the world right now. It would offer an unprecedented flight time from Singapore to Newark.
Airbus A350-900ULR has been touted as a more luxurious aircraft. It has larger windows, higher ceilings, specially designed lighting to reduce jetlag and wider body. The carbon composite airframe facilitates much better air quality. The optimized cabin would have improved humidity levels at higher altitudes. Singapore Airlines operates twenty one A350-900 aircrafts right now. It is in the process of inducting forty six more aircrafts of which seven would be the ultra long range variant. The airline would have the first aircraft delivered in September and the remaining aircrafts will be delivered by the end of 2018.
The new route would not only be helpful for Singapore Airlines to expand its presence and flyers to have a convenient, fast and more luxurious flight but also consolidate the city state as a major hub in the region. Singapore Airlines already flies to JFK in New York every day but it is via Frankfurt. It operates flights to Houston via Manchester five times a week, to Los Angeles via Seoul and via Tokyo every day and to San Francisco every day via Hong Kong. It also has daily nonstop flights to San Francisco. The airline is expected to launch nonstop flights to Los Angeles with some of the new A350-900ULR.
